action figure

Posted on December 17, 2006

A few weeks ago (or maybe it was months) photog pal, Weaver did a shout out amongst the other photog bloggers to help make someone’s special holiday wishes come true. That person: Stewart “Lenslinger” Pittman. Being quite the mastermind, Weaver conspired to get him an eerily little plastic doppleganger - a ‘war journalist’ action figure.

Here’s a link to the video!

gate.

Posted on December 15, 2006

The security gate at our complex has been acting up lately. This morning I was unable to get out because the exit gate didn’t automatically open. I had to pry the doors apart, squeeze through, and then go open the other gate. There was a moment, as I was wedged between the doors, that I daydreamd about being squished if the gate reactived itself. Luckily, that didn’t happen.

Anyway, on my way back into the complex tonight I remember looking at the gate and randomly thinking, “I wonder if I could crawl under the gate. I bet I could.”

Fast forward a half hour, I’m getting into the elevator with Jogging Suit Lady from down the hall. She moved into the complex the same time we did, and I’m convinced that she hates me or something, as run-ins with each other are always weird and uncomfortable. However, tonight she was really friendly and we were chatting away about the securitywith the gate not opening this morning. Before I knew it, this is what came out of my mouth: “Oh yeah, I was stuck there too. I had to crawl under the gate and go activate the other one.” Without missing a beat she says, “Really? I don’t think it’s possible to crawl under the gate.”

Silence.

“Why did I just say I crawled under gate?” I quickly thought to myself, and then stumbled through something that resembled an answer, “Er..um..yeah..no..well..er…um..” I rapidly moved on to talking about other gate-related issues while she just stared at me, most likely thinking to herself that I’m a complete weirdo - which after half-pretending to be a ninja, I guess I probably am.

We got out of the elevator and walked out together. She then jogged off towards the gate. Moments later, I drove through scrutinizing the amount of available clearance. I think someone could probably climb under the gate, if they really wanted to. But, definiteley not my fat-ass. I don’t know. Maybe I can. I’m really tempted to try, except that I just realized that this turning into a episode of Seinfeld or Curb Your Enthusiasm. And it’ll end with me trying to show the lady that I can actually slide under the gate and getting stuck or something.

It’s time for me to reinstate the “fill the gas tank when it gets down to a 1/4 tank” rule. It makes sense and is something that I’ve been doing forever.

gas_gauge.jpg

But, now that I inherited a news rig that has a digital gas gauge, I’ve sorta abandoned my gasophilosophy. You see, the new gauge tells me exactly how many miles I have left until I won’t be able to drive anymore So there has been one or two occasions where I’ve said, “I don’t need to go to the gas station just yet. There’s no way I’ll drive 50 miles today.” Well today I drove 46 before realizing it, and had to drive anxiously until I (luckliy) found a gas station in time.

So no more computerized gas for me. That’s just way too much information.

gadgets!

Posted on December 14, 2006

Today I went on a little field trip to the local GSATC “Gadget Fest” where I had a swell time. Basically, a bunch of tech-saavy folks got together and did a show-and-tell with their latest toys. My favorite moment was when a guy showed off his Panasonic Toughbook by throwing it on the floor and soaking it in water. It was hilarous hearing the collective gasp of a hundred people as he let the liquid loose upon the keys.

yikes!
He later explained that the laptop’s being used in a hostpital EMS setting, so it’s occasionally dropped or covered in blood and other bodily fluids. I’m always on the lookout for items that’ll be useful during the imminent zombie apocalypse, but no matter how cool the laptop is, I probably won’t be checking my email much while moving down the walking dead in a stolen SUV. Where was I? Oh yeah: Gadget Fest. It was pretty fun, and (at the request of event organizer, Phil Yanov) I even got up to even do a little gadget demo myself (which was a complete disaster). Anyway, I filed a video report for work in case you wanna see the laptop get abused.

twitter (and stuff).

Posted on December 14, 2006

Here’s a few random items, none of which are important enough for their own blog post:

1. “Looks like something for tweens” was the message I got back from Hasser when I invited him into my Twitter circle. But I don’t care. I’m gonna Twtter, man. Although part of the reason I did it was because of the nifty badge they give you for your blog sidebar, and I was crushed when it was too large for my site redesign.

2. Last week I had to do a story on local guy who went crazy in a parade float, driving like a hellion through the parade route with a dozen kids still in tow. Well, I had to render-out a crappy low-res mpeg video from the police department for our news, and to make it more clear I put a little yellow arrow on the screen showing where the action was happening. The next day I saw the same video on the Today show - and then again the other night on the Colbert Report. Both of them had my stupid, little yellow arrow on the screen. Kinda funny how affiliate video makes it around, you know?

3. I’m still trying to figure out the inner-working of wordpress. If you have an advice on how to add a “recent posts” thing to my sidebar, or turn off comment moderation - let me know!

4. Another quick Emmet Otter mention. I looked on youtube for clips and quickly found a video from the most rad scene, “The Nightmare”.

finally.

Posted on December 12, 2006

Here’s my first post with Wordpress. The old blogger-tagged site is still intact, and there’s links to all the old stuff on the sidebar. Right now I’m getting everything sorted out, and than means my links. Chances are, I’ll get to you, but if you want to remind me or a you have a new URL to add, now is the time to let me know. Hopefully, I’ll be back in business in no time!

progress.

Posted on December 10, 2006

Saw this sign in the beer and wine section of the local supermarket today and smiled.

Aside from that, here were other exciting highlights from this weekend:

1. Had this whole, “Let’s go out tonight!” thing planned for Saturday, but Hasser and I ended up getting sucked into watching the entire third season of Little Britain instead. And now,we’ll be talking like Lou and Andy all month long, much to my wife’s discomfiture.

2. For the most part, I’m not a very big fan of holiday music and movies. Seriously. But I have found one thing (apart from my robot ornaments) that makes me all warm inside. Emmett Otter’s Jug Band Christmas. I’ve always been obsessed with it as a kid, and this weekend I got the DVD - and watched every single feature on the disc. The making-of video was great, and it makes me hates CGI characters like Jar Jar and Dobby just that much more.

3. Someone mentioned that should check out the USB Snowbot from ThinkGeek. But it just so happens that I featured the snow-cylon a few weeks ago on my “Click on JL” podcast. It afforded me the opportunity to write the following line into WYFF4’s 5pm newscast: “It will enforce holiday cheer with it cold robotic gaze.”

tree.

Posted on December 4, 2006

This year my holiday robot tree is out of control. We got a fiber optic tree, and another half-dozen ornaments. I was planning on taking a photo to post on the blog, but I got carried away and made a little video.

404

Posted on December 1, 2006

I had a heart attack this morning when I went to glance over my website…and it wasn’t there! Instead was my 404 redirect page, which routed traffic into the folders and files of my site. Scary.

Somehow the index was deleted from my blog, so I quickly republished and then changed passwords like mad. Paypal, Blogger, MySpace - you name it. Like I said: heart attack.

I’m so switching to wordpress this week.
