Not much to report today, other than the fact that I’m THRILLED that all the “winter season premeirs” are now starting to gear-up. Last night’s Battlestar Galactica was rad. And right now I’m watching and tivo’ing another five shows tonight.
Work has been pretty decent and we’re getting ready to send off award entries this week. I’ve decided to send a whole bunch, so my Xbox 360 fund is going to take a hit once the submission fees kick in. (This is the Xbox that I’ve been perpetually saving-for-but-not-really-saving-for since the dawn of time).
All right. Back to my precious TV watching and online shopping.
Expect more from me tomorrow night.

winter preps
Posted on January 21, 2007
I should’ve posted this Friday. This is a shot of my gear all laid out for the impending ice storm (which never really happened). There’s something very calming when there’s a big news event about to happen, and I have get all of my gear in order (reminds me of getting ready for fire season).

Anyway, I ended up getting called in early to cover a bunch of auto wrecks that happened on an icy overpass. I was completely overprepared, but it was fun for the hour we had ice on the roads.

Here’s a small photo essay I’ve put together for today. Amanda the field producer was cool enough to snap these pics as I assembled a crack team of photogs to assist me in throwing a computer off the roof of the station [for my weekly videocast].
We wanted to go for the highest point on the building, so that meant (carefully, with much warning) climbing the receiver dish tower and then hoisting the computer up via a rope. It was fun, in an old-timey kinda way.

After relocating some cars in the parking lot, making a bunch of last minute safety precautions, and getting all the various XDCAMS ready, it was time to sacrifice the old computer tower to the hardware gods.

And here’s a look at the computer, moments after hitting the pavement. The other photogs said that I should’ve filled it with baby powder or something - to give it a little more “presence” when it crashed. I think it would’ve been cool to fill it with blood.

Here’s the story that ran tonight: [Click on JL: Ready For Vista?] Sometime tomorrow I’m gonna put together a compilation of all the various camera angles and what not (provided we don’t have an ice storm).

playlist
Posted on January 16, 2007
I’ve been slinging out a bunch of playlists to listen to in my new Subaru. And after the urging of longtime LLR ally, Mike Monzitta, I decided to paste a screenshot of one.

Notes:
I started off with JaRule for two reasons: 1. Any rap song that makes heavy use of Depeche Mode’s “Strangelove” is all right by me; 2. It’s from the Fast and the Furious, which is perfect because I someday dream of being an asian Tokyo Drift street racer.
From there it’s the usual blend of electonica, although there’s a heavy influence of Chester Bennington (Linkin Park), which is present in the Julien-K and MSI tracks. [some mps3 here]

Went to the grand kick-off for Microsoft Across America, here in Greenville. Today they rolled out Windows Vista and filled up all of the hotel conference rooms. And as you can see by the photo below, it was standing room only.

From the standpoint of someone who attends numerous conferences, seminars and press conferences, I can say with some confidence that this event was rather disorganized. But there was some great information and I got to see Vista up-close. Didn’t get to try it out or anything like that, as the whole event was oddly “un-interactive”. Like everyone else there I’ll have to take their word for it when they say “it’s rad”.

fighter

My little USB flash drive is a fighter, that’s for certain. I got it from a PR flack at the winter olympics - which I gotta admit was pretty classy way to deliver press kit information - and it’s been in pocket ever since.
And that’s how it ended up going through the washer/dryer last night.

I thought for sure it’d be a goner, losing all my valuable ROMS and random data I’ve accumulated over the past few months. But it’s still working perfectly, and even has a shiny clean look again. So in honor of my flash drive’s willpower and undeniable durability, I’ve crafted the following haiku:
flash drive’s will to live
surviving against all odds
(and the spin cycle)

evil
Posted on January 15, 2007
Whilst reading local subgenius, Phil Yanov’s blog this morning I chuckled when I noticed that his latest posts (about spoke.com) were categorized as “evil”. And while his posts - and subsequent WYFF intervew - were engaging, I really only crafted this blog post so that I could also add “evil” to my category list.

Had a pretty decent weekend. Ended up watching a bunch of movies, and I’m still undecided on whether or not I liked the French film, Chache. Call me an ugly American but for liking Underworld: Evolution but at least it had an ending. Also, I watched the first four hours of this season’s 24 and it was completely rad. Also, just ran across these online gems a moment ago.
1. Will Ferrel on ice skates! Trailer for Blades of Glory.
2. First image of Megatron from the upcoming Transformers film. Retarded.
3. I’m in the market for a video projector, and I’m half tempted to get one shaped like R2D2.
4. Trailer up for Fantasic 4 sequel. Looks cool, but man I hate CGI, you know?

auto show
Posted on January 12, 2007
Here’s a few pics from my adventure at the Greenville Int’l. Auto Show. I don’t know the names of any automobiles, so this won’t be particularly interesting to car nuts. Here goes:
They’re making some huge trucks these days!

Amanda the field producer does an imaginary test drive in this…um…red sportscar. I had her talk on the phone and fiddle with a pretend iPod to make it more realistic.

And here’s our game show photo, where you have to decide how to spend your cash: get an H3 with standard features, or a similarly priced Sony XDCAM?
