the camera that will someday kill us all
Posted on April 17, 2007
One of the big “buzz” items at the show this year is the Red One camera - which was evident by the long line around their alien technology hangar…

and the bouncers who ruled over the front entrance. So it was kinda like a mashup of Studio 54 and Area 51.

After hours of walking around, there was no way I was gonna wait in line to see the camera, and settled for ogling through the corner of the tent.

After a minute of peeking my head in and snapping photos, one of their reps was all, “Hey, what are you doing?” and Kevin did the whole, “We’re from b-roll.net” thing and they let us right in.
my arms got tired really fast

I got a chance to demo the “figg rig” - a steady cam-thing (designed by director Mike Figgis) that resembles a steering wheel. It’s a really cool idea, but after a while I think the fun will wear out because: 1) it’s not really like driving a car or playing a video game, 2) the weight starts to get annoying.

That said, I still probably love to have one.

some Las Vegas observations
Posted on April 16, 2007
The bottled water for sale in my room costs $8.
The ethernet cable for sale in my room costs $10.
A $5 cola on the strip does, in fact, taste better than the 60 cent cola you would buy at home.
I am no longer a young, drunk idiot walking around drinking pina coladas out of touristy beverage glasses - I am relieved, yet also saddened by this.
None of the casinos will ever be completely built at the same time, ever.
Scattered amongst lobby/atrium at the Bellagio are giant fake flowers and toadstools - I think giant insects would be a nice touch, as well.
Pai Gow poker remains a complete mystery to me.
Danny Gans hasn’t been “entertainer of the year” for at several years now, despite what all the billboards claim.
Of all the people enjoying Vegas right now, broadcast engineers seem to be having the most fun.
This is my first Trip to Vegas in seven years without Hasser.
Vegas just isn’t the same without my crew.

room with a view
Posted on April 16, 2007
Here’s a quick postcard post to say, “Hey, I’m in Vegas for NAB and I might be posting some stuff sporadically for the next few days. Probably.”

These photos remind me of the old quip about Vegas hotel rooms that goes something like, “Don’t worry too much about your room - you won’t be spending much time in it anyway.” That’s probably true, but I’m rather enjoying the view from our room on the one millionth floor of tower 15.

It’s kinda cool overlooking the pool area three miles below and watching little ant-people go about their business. I’ve also gazed out the window, imagining which rooftops would be best for SWAT team incursions and/or basejumping.
But, all of that daydreaming will be put on hold for the next few days as I stroll around the broadcasting conference, handling expensive equipment under the suspiscious watchful gaze of various electronics reps. Later!
keeping up with current events

Here are things I’m thinking about, none of them long enough to warrant their own blog post.
Despite the reviews, I loved Blades of Glory.
I never liked Don Imus.
Windows Vista is really starting to bum me out.
Waiting two more weeks for Heroes to return is killing me.
Melinda Dolittle is my favorite Idol by far.
I’ve started writing a novel this past week.
I was surprised that either guy was the father of ANS’s baby.
I like my station’s faster paced newscasts.
I’m furious about getting outbid on awesome robot stuff on eBay.
I never thought I’d subscribe to the Thunderbolts.
Jericho is getting pretty good.
I could watch this video all day.
The new LCD Soundsystem album is rad.
I’m considering buying LOTR online.
I’ll be doing some stuff at NAB for/with b-roll.net.
I keep forgetting to Twitter.

I desperately need a haircut.
Posted on April 11, 2007
This is obviously a ‘before I get ready’ photo. Luckily I still have enough “product” (hair gel, paste, etc) to keep me looking like someone who styled his hair all insane, rather than someone who doesn’t and then seems a different sort of crazy.

Just one more thing to get done before I leave for NAB this weekend. That, or buy more hair gel, I suppose.
Also, today marks the official departure from the “one word blog post titles” that I’ve been doing for the past few years. Time for something new. [That something new, being: sentences.

bureau
Posted on April 9, 2007
I was sent to work at the Spartanburg bureau today. Being sent there always reminds me of those episodes from TV medical dramas where a doctor temporarily works somewhere else - like a disaster scene or third world-like facility - just for an episode. While there, he/she works under ‘less than ideal’ circumstances with a colorful cast of embattled characters “who’ve seen it all” and seem really stand-offish at first, but later realizes they just turn their emotions off to get the job done.
Well none of that happened today, as I was in the new Spartanburg bureau where folks are much happier.
Here’s a look at the office from two different angles:

It’s still not as posh as the Anderson bureau, but it definitely isn’t as bad as it used to be. Its best feature is that there aren’t any. The previous bureau’s ‘features’ included: vomit from homeless people, asbestos, rats, and underground catacombs that possibly lead to the hellmouth the building was built upon. Here’s a link to my first impression of the bureau (and a nice little video, hosted by Elise).

Not much to report here at LLR headquarters other than I had a nice relaxing weekend. Cooked some ham. Got caught up on shows (and had a mini Jericho marathon). I beat Crackdown, which feels awesome since all the games I tend to play are open-ended and take forever to get anywhere. Of course, that didn’t stop me from starting the new Lord of the Rings MMO - which is suprisingly awesome. I’m still undecided on whther I’m gonna keep playing once my free PC Gamer trial runs out, as I’m getting attached to Kelemoth - my somber little wood elf.

recovery
Posted on April 4, 2007
My laptop might be wrecked (iced tea spill), but all is not lost. I’m rather certain that the damage is just limited to the LCD screen - although that really sucks for a laptop, you know? Anyway, thanks to a this handy device that I got from the station IT guy -which It just plugs into the USB port - I’m able to get all the data off my drive.

Well, not all the data - I’m still fighting my own password protected folders to get at some of the info, but it’s only a matter of time until I give up. Until then, I plan on keeping positive and exorcising my demons through my weekly “click” segment [video link].
[I woke up and looked over this post and realized that I wrote “exercising my demons” rather than “exorcising my demons” which conjurs up a hilarious image, no doubt - and would make a really sweet sitcom about former hellspawn that retire to earth and run a fitness center (hilarity ensues). I’m writing the pilot right now.]
