i shall dub thee: robot Friday
I’ve had a rather “robot packed” 24 hours. Last night I was fortunate enough to get into the sneak preview of Transformers - which was completely rad (aside from all the weird parallels to that Small Soldiers movie). It’s pretty much the same soundtrack cinematic elements from every other Michael Bay film, but with massive robot battles.

Then this morning Gordon presented me with a Flight of the Conchords promotional robot he got at Bonaroo. And by “presented me with”, I meant to say “threw at my head”. Thanks Gordon (and gang). Moments later I watched this youtube coke robot video that was emailed to me by Melinda.
Later, on a whim, I decided to check my employee mailbox and found a delightful letter from my PDX photog pal, Beth. Inside was an awesome little robot patch.

Now, I gotta think of the perfect place to attach it - and I’m totally gonna check my mailbox more of then if this is what it’s gonna be like.

That seems odd. I don’t remember leaving my camera there…

Wait. That’s no camera! It’s one of those newfangled Autobots.

Snapshot as he’s called, is part of the new Transformers line called, Real Gear Robots - there’s also a cell phone robot, a PSP-like one, and some others. Pretty rad. And it makes me laugh every time I think about how old Transformers like Soundwave - the cassette deck (and Blaster, was the boom box) - seem kinda out-of-date now (although he is still my favorite).

I’ll post it after the jump -mainly because no one wants to see that photo until it eventually falls off the page.

Today my reporter Mark and I had the pleasure of videotaping people sliding on the rock waterfalls in the downtown park - something city officials are looking forward to banning in the near future. So we headed down to the spot and found all kinds of slipping and sliding fools [video!], and then shot a number of stand-ups and teases in the “danger area”.

We made our way out to the rock island, and lady who was letting her kid climb all over the place warned us of nearby poison ivy. Good to know. And when we made it back to the shore, someone else told us we were near where there have been some alleged rattlesnake sightings. (And don’t forget the dangerous rocks!) If we only had some ninjas, this place would’ve made a perfect setting for a pretty kick-ass Mortal Combat bloodsport arena.

Have I mentioned my minor obsession with Publix Diet Sweet Tea? Well, the folks at the grocery store have definitely taken notice. I went in there this afternoon and right away I was jumped by the staff. “Did you get my email? I’ve been emailing you!” one of the clerks exclaimed the moment I stepped through the door. Apparently some of the deli staff conspired to hold a case of iced tea for me and I luckily showed up moments before they would’ve had to put it out on the shelves.

It’s good to know the deli gang has got my back (and now somehow got my email address).
The other cool thing today, actually happened at like 2am when I was randomly buying more domain names to add to my collection. I checked to see if my name was available - which it hasn’t been for at least seven years - and it was finally free! So now instead of some lame-ass company that parks hundreds of domain names, it actually belongs to a JL Watkins. 4 comments
i just had a pretty kick-ass weekend…
This was despite the fact that I (once again) injured myself in kickball on Friday. The league director took us newbies aside last week to explain the rules, ending with, “…and if you see anyone not drinking, practicing, or stretching before the game you are allowed to kick them in the crotch.” You can see how that little warning deterred me from also stretching before the game.
I was invited into the beta test of a MMORPG video game that I’ve been excited about for well over a year, but I’m restricted from offering any other details due to the “non disclosure agreement” that goes along with it. I doubt they’d ever find out, but I’m gonna play it safe and brag while being all cryptic-like.

Of course, the big highlight of the weekend was the Emmy Award ceremony, held down in the ATL. I was fortunate enough to walk away with three statues this year, in the following categories: news photographer, on camera talent - specialty reporter, and on camera talent - performer. I gotta say: it was cool to be recognized for my gig as a VJ web reporter. And it was especially awesome to win the photog award (along with Chad Zellmer, also from WYFF) when I was up against Southeast photog heavyweights like John Hendon, Kenny Hamilton, and Jon Samuels.
And then today I went to IKEA - which doesn’t sound as exciting as the other stuff I did this weekend, but I thought I’d mention it anyway.

My pal Lenslinger has a great blog philosophy: “Running low on trenchant commentary? Just post a goofy photo of yourself!” With that in mind, I present to you this photo from the LLR archive, taken this very week back in 1989.

If thats too much geekery for you, believe me, I understand - however, after the jump I present a breakdown and analysis of the photo for those that are interested.

I am so out of shape…
..which became apparent as I played kickball Friday night. That’s right: kickball. A group of us from work signed up, and were inducted into team Bust-N-Balls. As you can see, we weren’t actually playing kickball in the photo below, but rather doing jello shots (which, from what I’ve gathered is what the game is mostly about).

I’ll be blogging more about kickball later, as I’m still trying to figure out what the hell is going on out there. Heck, I’m still trying to figure out how I made it past home plate.

My Friday assignment was to photograph all the political action as Barak Obama talked before a reported crowd of 3500 (they expected 1500). The event went rather smoothly, despite the really late start. [video]

But the actual reason I was posting this was to point out all the non-traditional media on the platform.

And at one point, I was outnumbered by people shooting for websites.
