2008 shooting assignment #18
Did you know that John Edwards father worked in a mill? He did. Fact.

And that’s part of the reason the Edwards campaign holds many of their events in very old-timey, working class venues, like this abandoned peanut factory in Conway, SC. Sometimes his campaign people do dumb things, like not letting the media stand outside the venue and get shots of him coming off the campaign bus. But their location scout does a fantastic job, considering the latest venue looks just like a scene I remember from a West Wing flashback episode in which Jack Bartlett first campaigned for president. In a way it sorta feels manufactured, but it’s definitely a refreshing departure from all the clinking glasses at other (mainly Republican candidates) swanky fundraising events.
Even though this is a personal website: I’m not endorsing any campaign on my blog, but I gotta tell you: that Edwards really does shine in these town hall settings. He has his standard routine (”my father worked in a mill”;”I’m proud I’ve never taken money from a lobbyist”), but can also roll with whatever weird questions people throw at him.

During his speech I was getting reaction shots from different folks, and somehow my camera was just drawn to this charismatic fella. Unfortunately I could never get a shot of him when he was smiling.

I attempted to use this shot of him in the news package last night, but it never worked out. It made it look like this guy wasn’t paying attention, or Edwards was boring, or that I was making fun of the guy, or I was making fun of Edwards. So he didn’t make the cut.

Did anyone ask Edwards who he will be supporting when his camp folds in a week or two?
How dare you misremember the name of our 41st-and-a-half (I think) president, Jed Bartlet? Under the Patriot Act, I believe LLR can be taken offline for such a treasonous offense.
PS: More pictures of people who look like thumbs, please.
I have a book on special effects, including pictures of a rubber-faced fire suit work by stuntmen.
The suit looks like that guy.
