I finally saw the scary doll guy.
I nearly spilled my morning coffee all over myself on my way to work on Friday, reaching for my digital camera. The reason for that is because I finally ran across “the scary doll guy” - who has become a minor legend in our morning newsroom meetings.

He’s a street preacher that roams the greater Greenville area with a megaphone, a giant board strapped to his back covered in stuff about Revelations, and a ventriloquist dummy secured to his arm. From the moment I heard Waller talk about him I knew it was only a matter of time until I saw the guy, and he didn’t disappoint. He kinda stands there at the corner shouting stuff, and as soon as the light turns red and people are trapped at the intersection, he walks up to your car window and has the uber-creepy dummy shouts at you. I was across the street on this particular morning so I didn’t get the full show, but it was kinda fun watching all the drivers and passengers sorta freak out as he made his way to each car window.

Dude! I can’t believe I’ve lived here nearly nine years (crap, as I typed that, I wanted to end the sentence there, because I can’t believe I’ve lived here nearly nine years…but I digress), and I’ve never seen this freakshow. That’s crazier than the dude who hangs out at Pleasantburg and Wade Hampton with the PVC pipe “You’re-all-going-to-burn-in-hell” signs.
In case you’re interested in seeking him out, he’s usually up on Wade Hampton Blvd - although I saw him on Augusta on Friday.
I saw him last week at the corner of Augusta and Church Street/Mills ave… Freak Show is right. I tried to read his sign while waiting for the light but it just seemed to ramble about death and distruction.
Sounds like you need to make a Google Maps mashup where folks can post their latest sightings.
If you’re interested as to what the guy’s sign says…
I took this about a week and a half ago. It looks like the text wraps from left to right and even splits words in half.

Enjoy.
I saw him in Rock Hill when I was there back in late December. It was kind of a shock because it had been a while since I had seen him before. He spent a few weeks here in the triad, standing on corners in Greensboro and High Point.
