My weekend (mostly on the net) in 30 seconds.

Posted on February 10, 2008

Not much to report, but here goes. This weekend I scoured the internet for spoilers and clues about what’s going on with the inhabitants of Lost island. And when I wasn’t doing that I was (once again) running about the virtual beaches of Everquest 2, smiting giant lizard men with my holy lightning powers. I also hit Mapquest for a moment to snatch some maps for my pal Audio’s cross country trip to Boston.

Leaving from San Francisco with his pet turtle as co-pilot, Audio drove to New Orleans and then to South Carolina, before heading up north to Boston this morning. He went out for drinks with me and Kyann, in which we spent a good part of the evening recounting other times we went out drinking. And then today I caught up on the entire season of the L Word. I’m also read a bunch of chapters of my new book, “The Terror” by Dan Simmons which is ridiculously scary.

“To distant shrines well known in distant lands.”

For this Vegas vacation, we made Paris our base of operations. I really liked staying there; we got an awesome room in the newer section. Also, in the few places like the Mon Ami Gabi cafe, you get to experience a little slice of France without being hated because you’re an American. Instead, you’re just hated for being a tourist, and I’m okay with that.

Also, I’ve come to realize that I’ve been to Las Vegas so many times since I turned 21 (many years ago) that I’ve seriously lost count, and my wild Vegas stories are all so random and crazy that when I start telling them, I almost sound like I’m lying, but he fact that it’s set in Vegas still gives me the benefit of the doubt. Occasionally I feel like a modern day Chaucer spinning fanciful yarns in my own sleazy, drunken neon-colored version of the Canterbury Tales.

I’ve noticed that the casinos have pretty much given up on discouraging people from taking photos while inside, as ninety-eight percent of the visitors have a digital camera and will stop every few feet to take a snapshot. Another disturbing trend is the increase in the number of non-handicapped people riding around in those supermarket-style scooters everywhere instead of just walking.

Air travel always gives me chillbumps.

Posted on October 11, 2007

I’m heading off this morning for a relaxing, little excursion to Las Vegas. Back in July, my wife got us a pair of $7 tickets as part of Allegiant Air’s 07/07/07 promotion. I’ve been on pretty horrible flights that I’ve paid full price for - I can’t imagine what a $7 flight is gonna be like.

On an unrelated note…
Wednesday night I was shooting a news story, and heard one of my favorite Southern expressions: “chillbumps”. It’s used instead of the word “goosebumps” which I always thought was kinda corny sounding anyway.

Weekend snapshot: Oktoberfest!

Posted on October 7, 2007

I really wanted to post the photo of Kyann and I putting our heads on the wooden German caricatures, but it was placed on the “please do not post on your blog” list.

The rest of the weekend was spent getting caught up on little projects, wandering aimlessly around Costco, and getting shot in the ass by virtual terrorists in Rainbow Six: Vegas. (Luckily, I was able to turn off the friendly fire or else Hasser and I wouldn’t have got through the first mission without accidentally murdering each other.)

…I call it heaven. Beer heaven.

Or better yet, “Beerheaven”. That’s a wicked cool band name right there.
