Busy becoming Texans and all that.

Here’s a shot of me and my little lady, enjoying the NFL game this afternoon. I can’t believe that she’s already 10 months old! And how cute is that jersey, right?

I haven’t posted much from our adventures since we got to Houston, mostly because there hasn’t been much blog-worthy stuff. Twitterable, for sure. Eliza and I have either been driving all over town looking for a place to live or watching Beverly Hills 90210 reruns on SoapNet.

Now that we locked down an apartment in “midtown” Houston, finally getting a stable internet connection, and shedding my irrational fear of the freeways - there will be much more to report. I’m taking robot photos again, and we’re getting ready for a family trip to PDX next week.

Also, the job hunt officially begins on Monday, so I’m getting my resume and reel ready to rock some faces. Wish me luck!

Dodging bullets and what not.

by JL on September 23, 2008

This afternoon, I got the following Flickr message from my online pal, Zara:

“I was just browsing the weekly PostSecrets, and noticed this familiar image used on one of the cards. Thought you might be interested in seeing it. Unless of course this is one of your secrets I have stumbled upon :)”

For those of you not familiar with PostSecret, it’s a blog that displays scanned postcards sent by anonymous folks, burning to share some dark secrets in a way-too-creative method. Here’s the image (from the post) in question:

It’s definitely my photo (here’s the original), but definitely not my “post secret”. I like how it’s from the future, by the way. Does that mean that this person ended his/her engagement early? Or does it mean that she (I’m just going to assume it’s a ’she’ now) dodged the bullet of being single and finally found someone to marry, even if it is made spare parts and miscrostuffs. Thoughts? Thanks for the heads up, Z!

[Side note: people mostly steal my images for concert posters and CD covers, so this is a welcome alternative to the usual copyright infringement.]

Today we had an AR-15 for lunch.

by JL on September 5, 2008

Being that today is Friday (and I’m leaving soon), Hendon and I wanted to make sure we squeezed-in another meeting of the “Lunch-n-Guns” club. Today’s plan was supposed to be “Chik-Fil-A and an A.K.” mainly because it rhymed, but also because we wanted to eat chicken sandwiches and then fire-off a sub-machine gun.

Instead we decided to go with an AR-15, and found a considerable amount of joy in blasting the masked hoodlum on the target. This guy was wearing a ski mask and a flannel shirt, while holding a pistol to the face of a MILFy looking lady from the late 1970’s.

My ears are still ringing from all the blasting that we did. I’m also still chucking because a woman was at a nearby counter purchasing a rifle and Hendon whispered to me, “Hey, that chick right there is pretty hot, don’t you think?” while we were wearing protective earmuffs. He had to speak so loud to even hear his own voice that the gun club pretty much heard it, so I really had to sell my affirming nod when everyone looked at me for my response.

box full of star trek figures

by JL on September 2, 2008

While packing up the condo this weekend, I came across a ton of curious boxes that I felt compelled to document. The first in my new photo series “a box full of…” is a box full of random Star Trek figures. And while you can’t really get a sense for how many there are, let me assure you that it’s f–king ridiculous. I know this. At some point in my life I obviously had far too much time and way too much disposable income. And the sad thing? Many of those figures came out after I graduated college. I’ll say it again: ridamndiculous.

“Please let me have my own room”

I usually don’t post the baby pics on this blog, as my baby child has her own site now. But, since we’re moving and packing, I thought I’d share this one strange moment I captured a few days ago. It looks like Eliza is praying that she gets to eat mashed potatoes again or gets her own bedroom in our next place. (Hopefully she isn’t praying that I let her listen to the Jonas Brothers or some crap like that).

The real explanation behind her pose is equally cute: she just learned to clap and does it for just about anything that amuses her.

Wish I had charged the batteries…

This is a scenic, shot of the Biltmore Estate I got using my circular polarizer to make the clouds “pop”. Unfortunately I was so busy packing this little piece of screw-on glass…that I forgot to bring a spare battery for my SLR (or ultimately charge the batteries I had in the camera).

Anyway, I snapped this photo and thought to myself, “Oh man! I’m going to take all kinds of rad shots today.” Several photos later, I was out of juice and taking the rest of my pics with a little pocket camera. They turned out fine and all, but it was all kinda downhill after that one shot.
