High School Playbook - “Mascots” promos

by JL on August 8, 2008

Remember when I posted the photo of me and my crew getting ganked by a gang of ravenous mascots? Well, here’s the end result: promos for our upcoming season of High School Playbook football coverage.

I had a tough time deciding which one of these spots to embed first, so I decided to go with the more violent one. The other, kinda cutesy one is after the jump.

The original cut had much more carnage. Benjie even added demonic sounds and flames, but we decided that was probably more suited to high school hockey or something.

“When Mascots Attack”

Just another night at work. Not everyone made it out alive. Thankfully, I always carry an Elven blade when I go shoot video.

The forgotten legacy of DinoFour.

by JL on December 13, 2007

Today I was about my the back loading dock talking to the smokers, when I learned the most fascinating piece of information about my TV station. We were talking about mascot outfits (don’t ask) and our promotions wunderkind, Benjie casually said something like, “You should dress up in the station’s dinosaur costume.” What?! How have I worked here nearly three years and have never heard about our station mascot? “He’s called DinoFour,” someone else added to the conversation. At that point I realized that the only thing cooler than my station having a crappy dinosaur costume locked away somewhere would be if we had a crappy ninja costume locked away somewhere.

Without wasting time, some of the photogs and I strolled into the Creative Service Director’s office and half-begged her to let us see the outfit. She gladly agreed, leading us into a locked room at the back of the station. Strewn about where all sorts of old promotional materials, and that’s where we found DinoFour, resting in what used to be a darkroom sink. [click to continue...]

Don’t call him a tomato!

by JL on September 13, 2007

Today, while out shooting at a highly-competetive press conference (involving children, balloons, and anthropomorphic produce) I ran across a rival photographer. Although I gotta admit, she was rather friendly. And it turns out that she is, in fact, my internet-friend Mindy who I started chatting with on MySpace several months back and have never actually met. As fate would have it, she now works in the market and is thus my mortal enemy.

We took a moment to pose with a neutral party, although both of us were still “fronting” trying to look “bad ass.”

That’s an apple that we’re posing with in this photo, by the way (not a tomato). Also, it’s kinda hard to look “bad ass” in a photo with a giant creepy cartoon apple.

And even after we took another photo…still not all that “bad ass” - even with the H2 (or is it an H3?) in the background.

Welcome to Greenville, Mindy!
