“Dusk till Dawn” promo (:60)

by JL on February 24, 2010

It’s actually called the “10PM to AM” promo internally at the station, but somehow “Dusk till Dawn” stuck with me. (Unfortunately, the anchors don’t turn into vampires halfway through the promo)

KPRC – 10PM to AM News (#3 :60 version) from JL Watkins on Vimeo.

It’s like 99% shot with my 5D, except for like three shots. I’m not terribly happy with the encoding I did for this Vimeo upload, as it’s choppy and contrasty. But it’s a decent example of what I’ve been working on – the standard, thirty-second version of this spot is crazy fast compared to this extended promo.

News at the Speed of Life (:30)

by JL on February 15, 2010

Here’s the first spot in our new promo campaign that began Friday night during the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics. I shot about 95% of it with my 5D2, except for a few HD stock shots of people that I needed (so that it wasn’t all news people looking rad).

KPRC – 2010 Image Spot (#1 :30 version) from JL Watkins on Vimeo.

There’s an alternate (longer) version on our promo department’s YouTube channel, in case you want to see the same spot, but twice as long.

Local 2 Mornings – Your Olympic Team

by JL on December 18, 2009

The morning team are quickly becoming my favorite people to shoot with. Here’s my latest fun promo, that’ll tie-in to the upcoming Olympic games.

I found this old timey flip book, and decided to give it the HD treatment.

Shooting with the Canon 5D2

by JL on June 25, 2009

Here’s some semi-raw video shot with my Canon 5D Mark2 still camera that’ll be used for a promotional campaign. I have much more video – all these shots are done with my Lensbaby Composer lens attachment.

Shooting with the 5D2 has its limitations, for sure, but the saturation and depth-of-field more than makes up for them. You just have to practice and come up with some of your own tricks to get exactly what you want. Actually, I can’t wait to see what my next project looks like now that I actually have full manual control over the exposure with the new firmware update. (For this project I only used audio as an enhancement, or to hear my shot markers. I have had some luck with audio on other projects — more on that in another post).

Anyway, I just wanted to show off some raw video before posting the actual promo spots with all the post-production enhancements. Not bad for a consumer camera sporting a toy lens, right?

Here’s a little HD video I shot with my Canon 5DII of one of my robots being battered by sea water. Trust me, it looks pretty sweet in full HD. I’m probably going to have to upgrage my Vimeo account (and upload it there) to prove it.

Now that’s what I call a show!

by JL on April 24, 2009

Our daughter, Eliza loves grooving during the theme songs to various TV shows. She really gets into 30 Rock, The Office, and The Wire. Well, tonight she took her whole routine up a notch when the Parks & Recreation theme kicked-in. Hilarious! We kept rewinding the show and recording her going berserk to the song, and each video I shot had some awesome, new move she added – this one is my favorite because of the dramatic finishing move.

Has anyone else been seeing a lot of the Muppet’s lately? It started for me a few weeks ago with random news and items, followed by the SNL “Muppet bus” skit. And now there’s this completely inspired mashup:

Much like the fan’s Shining trailer remake, I finished watching it and thought, “Oh! I wish I’d thought of that.” I guess I still have My Robot Humps, right?
