My loot from Image Expo 2015

By January 10, 2015 Comics, Conventions

I didn’t take very many photos or tweet snarky comments while at this year’s Image Expo 2015. I think it was because I was caught up in all the fun of listening to all the amazingly talented creators share their new projects with the world. After dropping a ton of cash each year on San Diego Comic-Con International, buying the ‘premium’ ticket to this event (which was like $25 over the normal ticket price) seemed like a reasonable decision. And for the most part, it was. We didn’t really get any advance seating or anything like that, but the swag bag was killer.

What’s in the bag?

Tote bag, Image Comics t-shirt, and program guide. There were also the following expo-exclusive comics: Bitch Planet #1, East of West #16, Wytches #3, and Rumble #1.

The best thing that wasn’t in the bag? Not having to wait in the long line after the general session to buy the exact same items. As it turns out, the premium pass was more like a pre-order – which I will order again, without hesitation next year.

Lady Storm Shadow and Daft Clones

By July 26, 2013 Conventions

Every time I go to another convention I tell my self afterwards that I should have taken more cool cosplayer photos. Here’s a really sweet gender-swapped Storm Shadow…

And a few creative Clone Troopers from the 501st Legion, doing a Daft Punk crossover.

I’ve got a bunch more San Diego Comic-Con 2013 cosplay photos in my Flickr photoset!

Take A Peek Inside the Defiance Cafe

By July 22, 2013 Conventions

Probably the thing I love the most about Comic-Con is the insane upper-echelon marketing and awareness campaigns that take place surrounding the con. My favorite this year was SyFy’s transformation of the diner located in the Hard Rock Hotel to the Defiance Cafe. I’m a fan of the show and video game, so I was especially geeked to walk around in there. Spending $18 on a cheeseburger – not so much.

It seemed like no expense was spared, and all of the decoration (which was overwhelming) really coordinated well with the feel of the brand. Here’s a Flickr photo dump of most of the snaps I took inside the cafe:

Cinemax’s ‘Banshee’ Marketing At Comic-Con

By July 21, 2013 Conventions

You may know this about me, but I’ll tell you again. I LOVE the Cinemax original series Banshee. So it was a fun surprise to see their street marketing “booth” outside the Omni Hotel (across from the Convention Center).

They had iconic representations from the show and brand marketing on display, all presented by Pennsylvania Dutch folks who handed out a mini graphic novel and a DVD of the show’s pilot episode.

‘Saga’ Costumes Done Right!

By March 21, 2013 Conventions, My Geek Adventures

If you’re into comic books, or sci-fi and haven’t been reading Brian K Vaughn’s intersteller series, “Saga” then you are REALLY missing out. With the series being so damn brilliant, I wondered when there would be some seriously awesome – if any – “Saga’ cosplay at the cons. This past weekend in Orlando, I was thrilled to find several “Horns & Wings” amongst the crowd.

How perfect are these two?

Networks Broadcasting from Comic-Con

By July 16, 2012 Conventions, My Geek Adventures

Now that I only do a handful of live remotes a year (many, I’m not even shooting), I have even more appreciation when I come across live broadcast locations. It’s funny to think I’m now one of the weird dudes, standing around the perimeter, staring and taking photos.

Here’s the super-impressive G4 studio location. I didn’t get any shots of my Chobot, but I did snap a blurry photo of Chris Hardwick eating a sandwich which didn’t make the cut.

And here’s the tiny (by comparison) interview stage at the FOX Television booth. Where I took a jab to the throat when security guys blocked the path, thinking that David Boreonaz was going to exit the booth in my direction.

And – for good measure – here’s a snap of the local broadcast warriors.
